Description

A recent preoccupation with colour and light lead me to create this soft pastel and pastel pencil drawing. I wanted to use the high levels of pigment found in soft pastel to describe the intensity of the bright sunlight on the subject, and the pastels powdery softness, to unfold the delicate rose petals as well as the fleecy texture of the fabric. For the background, I used a dark green, as a contrasting colour, and to add further richness to the pink. I chose to darken the tonal value of the green pastel by blending it with black, to create even more vibrancy in the drawing. Pastel pencil was used in the final stages of the drawing to add any detail where needed. I used photographs I had composed and taken myself as reference points for this drawing, which was made on UART sanded paper. The wrapped roses, reaching up and out towards the light, hints at a deeper symbolism and meaning, and I hope, evokes this feeling in the viewer.
